Currently Reading: THE BIRD KING by G. Willow Wilson
I’m very curious about this upcoming release from G. Willow Wilson, creator of Kamala Khan, aka Ms. Marvel. This historical fantasy takes place in Spain in the 1490s, when the last Muslim sultanate was surrendering to the Christian rulers King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella. In this setting, a royal mapmaker with the ability to alter reality goes on the run with a palace concubine in the hopes of finally gaining their freedom. I’m only a few chapters in so I can’t comment too much, but I’m looking forward to reporting in next week!
Recently Finished Reading: PRIDE by Ibi Zoboi and THE SMOKE by Simon Ings
The good news is that I got through two books in the last week, the bad news is that they were only so-so reads. While PRIDE did a fantastic job of reimagining PRIDE AND PREJUDICE into a modern New York setting, the characters strangely fell flat for me. THE SMOKE, on the other hand, was simply too weird for me to wrap my head around.
Probable Next Read: WILD COUNTRY by Anne Bishop
I have an ARC of WILD COUNTRY, the latest standalone in the world of The Others. After enjoying LAKE SILENCE, I’m looking forward to the next one! This time, the tale will take place in the small town of Bennett. Fans of the original THE OTHERS series will remember this as a key location visited for a handful of chapters in some of the later books. They may also remember what seemed like a throwaway tiny storyline in the final book about a human character in Lakeside getting approval to move to the city of Bennett – a move I have now realized was set up for one of the lead characters in WILD COUNTRY!
