Top Five Tuesday – Characters That Sort Into Slytherin

At last, we’ve reached the final week of Bionic Book Worm’s Hogwarts celebration!  It’s time to celebrate everybody’s favorite house to hate, Slytherin!  For those of you who don’t know about this house, the members have the following traits:

They are ambitious, driven, goal focused, determined, prepared, perfectionists, adaptable, realistic, self reliant, charming, assertive, and ruthless. They are highly selective with their loyalty, love positive attention and thrive on praise, care about the impression they give, demand respect, and can be disloyal.

So, for our last Hogwarts House Challenge, the characters that match Slytherin are:

91T8tVvsIeLApril May – AN ABSOLUTELY REMARKABLE THING by Hank Green
April May starts the book as a relatively decent person, but when presented with the opportunity for fame and influence, she slowly abandons all her principles in her quest for more clicks and followers.  She will even turn on those who have been supportive so that she doesn’t have to deal with emotional fallout. At her core, April May wants to help humanity understand the alien phenomenon that has cropped up on earth, but her more selfish tendencies override everything else.

theravenboysGansey – THE RAVEN BOYS by Maggie Stiefvater
Gansey is perhaps the best example of a “good” Slytherin. Gansey is a smooth operator, someone who knows how to circulate in the right circles and is completely focused on achieving the singular goal of finding the hidden tomb of long dead (possibly magical) king. Gansey is the uncontested leader of his group but sometimes doesn’t always think through how his actions will affect the other members.  He never acts maliciously, just thoughtlessly.

scythe-9781442472433_hrScythe Goddard – SCYTHE by Neal Schusterman
This is a man who basks in the cult-like following he’s created in the scythe community.  He’s idolized for the way that he believes that Scythes should be unrestrained in their killing duties, that they are above regulation. He has enough charisma to sway people to his cause, but behind the scenes is utterly devoid of morals, merciless with anyone

18952341Kuni Garu – THE GRACE OF KINGS by Ken Liu
One of the heroes of this massive silkpunk epic, Kuni Garu is a small-time bandit who finds himself caught up in a whirlwind of kingdom politics and maneuverings by the gods.  The more power he amasses, the more he is willing to do whatever it takes to keep it. He has a natural need to be loved and while he tries to honor ties to the men and women who help him ascend to be a ruler, he’s willing to make cuts to his entourage where necessary.

51T1VLg5CoLXifeng – FOREST OF A THOUSAND LANTERNS by Julie C. Dao
The ultimate example of a person corrupted by their Slytherin tendencies, Xifeng has been told in a prophecy that one day she will become Empress.  Everything Xifeng does in her life is to make that prophecy a reality.  She abandons her childhood sweetheart, she manipulates her way through court, and eventually commits some truly horrific acts in her quest to achieve the throne.
