May 2019 Book Picks

I’m incredibly excited about several books releasing in May, although as fate would have it, I haven’t had a chance to read any of my picks yet!  My interest as registered below is based largely on hype and/or the book premise.  A few of these I DO have ARCs for, so look for reviews in the coming weeks!

Book covers link to Goodreads so that your TBR can suffer alongside mine.

STORM CURSED by Patricia Briggs
Release Date: May 7th, 2019
Mercy Thompson is one of my favorite urban fantasy series and one of my favorite protagonists period.  This is the eleventh installment in the Mercy Thompson series, and finds our coyote shape-shifting protagonist trying to keep the Tri-Cities area a neutral ground for human and fae alike.  I was incredibly lucky to be sent a full release copy of this book by the publisher, and I will be starting this in the next few days, so keep an eye out for my review!

WE HUNT THE FLAME by Hafsah Faizal
Release Date: May 14th, 2019
I will admit, my interest in this YA fantasy is largely-inspired by the incredible amount of hype surrounding this upcoming release.  Not to say that an ancient Arabia-inspired tale isn’t exactly my cup of tea!  I was not among those blessed with a highly coveted ARC, so it will likely be a bit before I can get to this one, but it looks like a fantasy full of enemies-to-lovers romance, and I definitely will read it eventually!

THERE’S SOMETHING ABOUT SWEETIE by Sandhya Menon
Release Date: May 14th, 2019
I don’t read a lot of contemporary books these days, but the utterly delightful WHEN DIMPLE MET RISHI filled my heart with job last summer, so I’m happy to see another book by the same author, just in time for summer release!  This book is a love-story revolving around Sweetie, a new character who will have a meet-cute with Ashish, Rishi’s younger brother. I’m going to try really hard to squeeze this read in this summer!

THE KINGDOM by Jess Rothenberg
Release Date: May 28th, 2019
I read an excerpt from this YA sci-fi thriller a few months back and knew I definitely wanted to read it. The comps being used for this one are the podcast SERIAL meets WESTWORLD and it shows.  Set at a Disneyland-esque theme park where human-android hybrids and other engineered creatures create an immersive fantasy experience.  But when a park employee is found dead, one of those hybrids is accused of murder.  What really happened that night will be unraveled through a series of flashbacks, interviews, and court-room testimony.  There are a lot of aspects about this book I find intriguing, and I’m looking forward to reading!

AN ILLUSION OF THIEVES by Cate Glass
Release Date: May 21st, 2019
To protect her brother, a courtesan uses all of her political influence with the Shadow Lord to spare him the death penalty for using magic, but ends up being banished from the court in return.  She’ll end up falling in with a motley crew as she uncovers a conspiracy that threatens to bring civil war to the country.  I lucked into an eARC of this book and am looking forward to reading it and sharing my thoughts very soon!

  1. These all sound great! I keep meaning to try the Mercy Thompson series and I haven’t read When Dimple Met Rishi Yet, but I would like to try it at some point.

I’m really looking forward to We Hunt the Flame – I love stories where girls disguise themselves as boys, it’s one of my favourite tropes – and The Kingdom sounds amazing! Thanks for bringing it to my attention. 🙂 I really like the sound of An Illusion of Thieves, too, so it looks like I have even more books to add to my TBR!
