Currently Reading: JADE WAR by Fonda Lee
FINALLY. I’m starting on one of my most anticipated reads for 2019! JADE CITY was a delight to read earlier this year, and so far JADE WAR has been equally fantastic. I’m about 40% into my review copy and hope to have it done by the end of the weekend. As expected, the story in the sequel greatly expands the world. JADE CITY was almost entirely focused on Kekon’s capital city of Janloon, but with JADE WAR, the story has sent characters to other countries as world events start complicating an already pressurized situation between the No Peak and Mountain clans. These books are so good, if you haven’t read them yet, get on it!
Recently Finished: GIDEON THE NINTH by Tamsyn Muir
I finished my buddy read of GIDEON, and my review will be going up at the end of the week. The short version is that this ended up being a middling read for me, mostly because I felt it took SO LONG to get going. About 40% into the book, it suddenly turns into a murder mystery in the middle of a gothic house with deadly traps and that is when I started consuming the book at a much greater pace. This was a review I really wrestled with, so come by later in the week for all my complicated love/hate feelings!
Probable Next Read: TO BE TAUGHT, IF FORTUNATE by Becky Chambers and/or…???
I had hoped to squeeze in TO BE TAUGHT over the holiday weekend, but I decided I’d rather just tackle as much of JADE WAR as possible, so I delayed on that one for now. I might start TO BE TAUGHT and read simultaneously since it’s so short so I can check that off my list, but it’s going to be hard to tear me away from my magical gangster family. With luck I’ll have time to start something else this weekend and I have so many good options I’m not sure what I’ll choose! I’ll probably squeeze in a shorter YA before tackling another one of the giant adult fantasy books I have on deck, just a matter of choosing which one!
