Currently Reading: A HOUSE OF RAGE AND SORROW by Sangu Mandanna and THE DIABOLIC by S.J. Kincaid
After a nice long epic fantasy, I need a little recharge time, so I’m diving into a swath of YA! I’m already a good chunk into RAGE AND SORROW, so I expect to have this checked off by the weekend. This is an usual mix of fantasy and sci-fi, where in the far flung future of humanity, the gods still occasionally interfere. RAGE AND SORROW is the sequel to last year’s A SPARK OF WHITE FIRE, and story is inspired in part by the Indian tale, the Mahabharata. THE DIABOLIC on the other hand, is an audiobook re-read for me. I’m spending more time in the car this month getting to and from physical therapy for my arm post-elbow surgery, so I’m making the most of it! I really enjoyed this YA sci-fi when I originally read it, but it’s been so long I wanted a refresher before diving into the sequel, with a third installment scheduled for next year!
Recently Finished: JADE WAR by Fonda Lee and TO BE TAUGHT, IF FORTUNATE by Becky Chambers
It took some time, but I finally finished the massive JADE WAR! This is a sprawling epic fantasy, but in a somewhat modern fantasy. I’ve heard this series loosely described as Chinese-inspired mobsters with magic and that pretty much hits the nail on the head. This sequel drastically opens up the scope of the world, no longer concerned with just the nation of Kekon, but with the war brewing in other nations as well. This was a really good read, and I look forward to sharing my review! In the meantime, my review for TO BE TAUGHT, IF FORTUNATE is already up. This was a quick novella I squeezed in over a few nights and was a diverting tale of exploration in the 22nd century.
Probable Next Read: KINGDOM OF SOULS by Rena Barron
My catch-up of ARCs continues with KINGDOM OF SOULS, released earlier this month. KINGOM is an African-inspired YA fantasy about a girl who doesn’t display any of the magic her family is known for. When children go missing and signs point to the Demon King arising, that girl must decide if she is willing to trade away years off her life for the power to save her people. I’ve been looking forward to this one, and hope to have it finished before I next check in!
