Currently Reading: THE THRONE OF THE FIVE WINDS by S.C. Emmett and THE EMPRESS by S.J. Kincaid
I fully expect for my next read, THE THRONE OF THE FIVE WINDS, to take me at minimum a week to finish. It’s a big THICK book, and the early 50 pages have been slow going simply because I’m still acclimating to all the characters. It’s the kind of book where there’s an emperor, a first and second queen, a head concubine, and several princes from the aforementioned women. This is NOT a knock against it (yet), just a lot to keep track of initially, and I’m sure once I’m not flipping back and forth to remind myself who is related to whom, it will go a lot faster!
In the meantime, I’ve surprised myself by already jumping into the audiobook sequel, THE EMPRESS, the follow up to THE DIABOLIC which I reread last month and absolutely loved. Usually I need a breather between audiobooks, but I couldn’t wait for an excuse to check this out from my library!
Recently Finished: THE DRAGON REPUBLIC by R.F. Kuang and THE BEAUTIFUL by Renée Ahdieh
Two very different books which elicited two very different reactions from me. THE DRAGON REPUBLIC was everything you could want in a sequel to THE POPPY WAR, with messy characters getting even messier, magic battles, war and betrayal. Really enjoyed it and was glad to cross that off my list. Full review can be found here! On the flip side, however, I was disappointed by THE BEAUTIFUL, a YA fantasy that I guess involves vampires, but you’d be hard pressed to tell that because the book for some reason refuses to actually delve into the world it created. It felt like there was a massive amount of world building being hidden behind a giant curtain, and the author only lifted up a corner to give you a confusing peak. Look for my review later this week.
Probable Next Read: GUILD OF TOKENS by Jon Auerbach
After the tome that is THE THRONE OF THE FIVE WINDS, I suspect I’m going to need something a little lighter, so I’m lining up a self-published work I received for review, GUILD OF TOKENS, about a woman who joins a game of real-life “quests” in New York, only to discover there’s a sinister secret at the heart of it. This is my first LitRPG novel, and I’m looking forward to finally checking it out!
That’s what’s on my plate this week! What are you reading?
