Currently Reading: THE TOLL by Neal Shusterman
Look at me, finishing a trilogy!  I was determined that THE TOLL not go the way of WAR STORM, in which the final book in a series came out and I kept delaying getting it and now it’s been 18 months and I still haven’t read it.  Not this time!  Book two of the series ended on a cliff hanger, and THE TOLL has an unusual way of picking up the pieces, telling bits of the story from the days immediately following those events, and other pieces months or even years later.  I’m 60% through this, so there’s a good chance I’ll be done before the weekend!

Recently Finished: THERE BEFORE THE CHAOS by K.B. Wagers and BINTI: HOME by Nnedi Okorafor
I used my Saturday morning to finish THERE BEFORE THE CHAOS and write my review, which you can read here!  This was a new direction for Hail Bristol, who is a character who usually likes to take action.  Settling into her role as empress, Hail is trying to give diplomacy a try and spare her nation the trauma of having war spill into their borders.  Even though this was less action-packed, I still loved it, and I’m excited to already have a copy of the sequel, DOWN AMONG THE DEAD, in my possession, thanks to Orbit!  I also had time to finish the novella BINTI: HOME, which was a good read, though it felt incomplete as it ends on a dramatic cliff hanger.  I’m hoping to squeeze the third and final novella in the trilogy onto my reading docket before the end of the year.

Probable Next Read:  STARSIGHT by Brandon Sanderson
It’s here!  The sequel to one of my favorite reads of 2018, SKYWARD, is here!  This is my immediate next read, it gets to jump straight to the front of the line (sorry everything else!).  A fitting end to Sci-Fi Month, no? SKYWARD followed Spensa, a young girl training to be a fighter pilot to defend the last remnants of humanity against an alien force.  At the end of the book, she made some startling discoveries about the nature of the threat, and how humanity came to be on this far flung planet in the first place.  Now, we get to see what she does with that information.  It’s rare to have a Sanderson sequel come out so close to the previous installment, and I’m excited to have it in my hands!
