Summer 2020 Fantasy Book Releases To Get Excited About

With summer just around the corner, and Wyrd and Wonder in full swing, I decided now is an excellent time to take a look at what tantalizing books are peeking just over the horizon!  The list I’ve assembled is by no means exhaustive, but contains all the fantasy books that I, personally, am incredibly excited to read in the coming months.  (Side note: shout out to CHAOS VECTOR, sequel to VELOCITY WEAPON, which is among my most anticipated of the summer but is sci-fi and so cannot hang with its fantasy brethren).

If you’re interested in any of these, I’m linking all covers to Goodreads so you can easily throw them on your own lists!  For sequels, I’ll also link to reviews for previous books in case you haven’t started the series yourself yet.

JUNE 2020

Release Date: June 23rd, 2020 (North America)
Technically, this one is out in ebook format, and has been released in the UK, but the release in the US was delayed due to to coronavirus. Regardless, I’m curious about this court drama, which exists in a world where magic is powered by memories, and our hero has a gaping hole in his own mind about events that went down in his childhood.

Release Date: June 23rd, 2020
This little novella caught my eye immediately with the cover, and then sealed the deal by promising me a tale about a priestess who falls in with thieves.  Cue escapades.  I enjoyed Zen Cho’s SORCERER TO THE CROWN and hope to find another found-family to fall in love with.

WE RIDE THE STORM by Devin Madson
Release Date: June 23rd, 2020
The self-published community can’t stop talking about this one, which placed 3rd in the 2018 SPFBO and has since been picked up and edited by Orbit for mainstream distribution. Following a warrior, an assassin, and a princess in the middle of a war, this is the start of a new series, and I really hope I like it because Orbit has ordered seven books in total from Devin Madson, including a prequel trilogy that will be released ALL AT ONCE on August 4th.

THE ANGEL OF THE CROWS by Katherine Addison
Release Date: June 23rd, 2020
I’ve been intrigued by this standalone fantasy since it was announced.  An alt-ninteenth-century London where supernatural creatures live out in the open, and every building has an angel, and one angel is hunting down Jack the Ripper?  YES PLEASE.  I was so excited to get an ARC for this one, and I’ll be checking it out in the coming weeks.

UNRAVEL THE DUSK by Elizabeth Lim
Release Date: July 7th, 2020
July is apparently the YA duology-finisher month for me!  First up, we have the sequel to SPIN THE DAWN, an absolutely enchanting story.  While the publisher pitched it as “Mulan meets Project Runway,” that only encapsulates the first third of the story.  From there, Maia goes on a journey across the kingdom in an adventure that shares much more with Arabian Nights than anything else.  Maia made a big sacrifice at the end of SPIN THE DAWN, so brace yourself for the fallout coming (that cover might be a hint).

THE CROW RIDER by Kalyn Josephson
Release Date: July 7th, 2020
The other duology part two to release is the sequel to 2019’s THE STORM CROW.  This series is good for fans of stories of heroes who bond with magical creatures.  In book one, Princess Anthia was forced to move to the royal court of the kingdom that invaded her country, killed her mother, and wiped out the elemental crows that have lived with her people for generations.  After discovering one unhatched crow egg that survived the purge, Anthia has made her escape and is ready to lead a rebellion – but that means mastering her bond with this newly hatched crow first.

PEACE TALKS by Jim Butcher
Release Date: July 14th, 2020
After too many years, the next book in THE DRESDEN FILES is almost upon us!  What started as a series about a wizard PI living in Chicago has become a tale of one man caught up in the machinations between fae, vampires, angels and more.  This time around, the White Council is trying to force a negotiation between the various warring entities, and Harry’s been asked to help provide security at the summit.  Naturally, things go very wrong.  I can’t wait to read a new book in my favorite series, July can’t get here soon enough!

ASHES OF THE SUN by Django Wexler
Release Date: July 21st, 2020
One of the last physical arcs I got before everything went sideways, ASHES OF THE SUN is a new adult series from DJANGO WEXLER, best known for his SHADOW CAMPAIGNS series.  While I haven’t had time to check that one out yet, I’ll be diving into this magical post-apocalyptic tale about a brother and sister on opposite sides of factions racing to find a powerful artifact.  This is book one in a new trilogy.

August 2020

Release Date:  August 4th, 2020
And now for the biggest question mark on my summer list.  GIDEON THE NINTH was an incredibly uneven read, waffling from barely keeping me interested to “couldn’t put it down.”  This time around, the plot focuses on Harrow, who largely seems to be held as a far more interesting character than Gideon.  I’m curious to see if I like this book more than the first, or if I decide it’s finally time to eject from the series.

Release Date: August 4th, 2020
SEVEN BLADES IN BLACK was one of my favorite releases of 2019, so the sequel absolutely had to be on my list!  Sal the Cacophany is back, ready to hunt down more names on her revenge list as she travels about the empire doing mercenary work.  This time, she’s been hired to steal an entire fleet of airships.  What could possibly go wrong?

Release Date: August 18th, 2020
2019’s WICKED FOX was a slice-of-life drama that happened to feature a supernatural creature.  Miyoung is just trying to get on with a normal teenage life, but her nature as a gumiho means that she has to devour the souls of men or waste away to nothing.  Events at the end of WICKED FOX were devastating to both Miyoung and her love interest Jihoon, and they’re trying to figure out how to move on with their lives.

Release Date: August 25th, 2020
THE CHORUS OF DRAGONS series has certainly had its ups and downs, but they are books I simply cannot put down.  After the fantastic THE NAME OF ALL THINGS, which focused on kick-ass Janel and was a much more streamlined tale than its predecessor, THE MEMORY OF SOULS has a lot to live up to. Kihrin and Janel are traveling to the Manol vané kingdom to ask the king to perform a ritual which will fight off the rise of an ancient evil, but will also strip the vané of their immortality.  My love of these books is usually inversely proportional to how much they use the weird soul-swapping magic, so we’ll see if my love for these books continues or finally wanes.

And that is my list of 2020 summer releases!  What books are you looking forward to?
