First Impression: THE MASK OF MIRRORS by M.A. Carrick

The Mask of MirrorsRecently over at io9, Orbit Books released the cover and an excerpt for the upcoming fantasy novel THE MASK OF MIRRORS by M.A. Carrick.  The first in a new trilogy entitled THE ROOK AND THE ROSE, MASK is about a young woman named Renata who is a con artist hoping to trick and steal a fortune away from the noble houses to secure a future for herself and her sister.  M.A. Carrick is the pseudonym for writing duo Marie Brennan and Alyc Helms.  THE MASK OF MIRRORS will release in January 2021.

Can I just say that it is killing me that I cannot have this book in my hands right now?  The excerpt is pushing some of my favorite buttons.  Roguish mysterious masked man? Check.  A duel of wits between two characters as they play to a larger crowd?  Check.  An actual sword duel? Check.  I’m getting major SCARLETT PIMPERNELL and ZORRO vibes from this tale and I am HERE. FOR. IT.  Given that the book blurb says that a “con artist, a vigilante, and a crime lord” will have to work together to survive, I’m curious to find out if this entire book will be from Renata’s POV or if it will swap off.

Also want to shout out the GORGEOUS cover art designed by Lauren Panepinto and illustrated by Nekro.   I just immediately want to sink into a world of balls and intrigue.

What say you?  Who else is looking forward to this new trilogy?

  1. Oh, this looks amazing! Marie and Alyc were on one of our panels for the r/fantasy con and they were talking about a book they wrote together but I didn’t really look into it…..I am definitely going to have to read this.
