The PS5 Games I’m Most Excited About

In a normal year, June would be the time of the annual E3 conference, when game developers from around the world come together to announce the shiny new things that we’ll be playing in the hopefully not too distant future. Of course, this isn’t a normal year, so instead of packing the announcements into one weekend, expect press conferences all summer long.  Sony took to the internet last week to officially unveil the design of the PS5, but more importantly, to announce a whole host of games that would be (eventually) available to play on the machine.  Below is a round-up of the games that caught my interest.  I should note that not all of these games will be exclusive to the PS5, so if it isn’t your gaming system of choice, you might be in luck!

MARVEL’S SPIDER-MAN: MILES MORALES
Playstation kicked things off with a bang by making the first game announcement about Miles Morales, the black character who carries the Spider-Man moniker and who was featured in the fantastic INTO THE SPIDER-VERSE movie a few years ago.  My enthusiasm cooled slightly when it was revealed that this was going to be a smaller scale game (it’s not “officially” SPIDER-MAN 2), meaning we can probably only expect a ten-to-fifteen hour adventure with Miles.  Still, since Miles was introduced in the first game, I’m hoping that we’ll see more of him in the future of this series.

HORIZON FORBIDDEN WEST
The second I heard Alloy’s voice, I started vibrating with excitement.  Ladies and gentlemen, my favorite Playstation game, and one of my Top Three Games of All Time, is getting a sequel!!  HORIZON ZERO DAWN was an absolutely fascinating story of a young girl trying to understand why the robotic dinosaurs roaming the land have begun acting weird, and what their connection is to a mysterious group that attacked her village.  This game managed to balance two main storylines: the politics of what was happening between the various tribes, and the reveal of why the heck there are robot dinosaurs and what destroyed the Earth centuries ago.  I have never been so excited to collect audio logs, so invested was I in the lore of what came before.  There’s no release date on this, so I suspect it is at MINIMUM a year out, but I will be playing this the second it’s available.

KENA: BRIDGE OF SPIRITS
This is an action-adventure game about a young girl who is a Spirit Guide who is trying to restore balance to a forest. Look, I’m not going to lie, the little creatures you collect in this game look absolutely adorable.  AND it looks like you’ll be able to ask them to aid you in battle by doing things like dogpiling on an enemy to restrain them.  This game looks gorgeous and the combat looks engaging, so I’m very hopeful this will be worth playing in the future!

GHOSTWIRE: TOKYO
Okay, I’m not 100% sure this one is going to be for me, but from the trailer that dropped, it looks like there’s a chance this game will fall into a similar category of CONTROL, a game that’s eerie with a dash of creepy that doesn’t cross the line into horrific.  After an event causes the disappearance of 99% of the population of Tokyo and floods the streets with supernatural creatures, it’s up to you to use your abilities to fight back the darkness and figure out what caused the problem in the first place.

STRAY
Now to jump from the weird to the adorable.  But still weird. Meet STRAY, a game where you play as a cat in a city inhabited entirely by robots.  While the trailer doesn’t particularly give you a sense of what your goals are as a cat, the developer site promises that you’ll roam about the city, solving mysteries, defending against “unforeseen threats” and oh, you’ll make friends with a tiny little drone.  Okay, yes, I’m completely sold on this concept.

PROJECT ATHIA
And now we have the winner for “Trailer That Tells Us Basically Nothing But I Still Want It.”  Young woman in some sort of ruins, and strange shadow creatures, including a motherf-ing dragon?  Yes please!  This is from an off-shoot studio of Square Enix, so I have absolutely no idea what to expect from the final game, but you can bet I’ll be watching for more details.

And those are the games that caught my eye.  What are you excited for?  Any I didn’t mention that you are dying to play?

      1. I liked the first game well enough, but it frustrated me that there were not more skills/different ways to play. I’d love to see a more expanded skill tree that allows you to commit to a path while causing you to forego others. Getting every single skill was boring.

  1. Ghostwire Tokyo and Kena both look interesting. Don’t know if I’ll get a PS5 though. Certainly not at launch; I’ll give it a while to see what happens with the library. All the series I like seem to have been releasing ports for the Switch anyway.

I’ve always heard Horizon Zero Dawn is amazing, but it didn’t grab me the first time I played through a bit of it. Maybe there’s something wrong with my brain, I don’t know. It looks extremely impressive, though.

    1. Even if I don’t get it right at launch, I’m definitely upgrading to PS5 before I upgrade my Xbox. I haven’t quite fallen in love with my switch, though I do like the portability.

I absolutely fell in love with HZD, it just clicked with me. Very excited to see what new things are in store!

  2. As an extremely huge gamer myself, and a life-long fan of Sony, I can relate this post so much!!!! I’m currently SUPER DUPER MEGA excited for The Last of Us Part II coming out this Friday!!!! As for the Sony event, I share your enthusiasm for all these games as well as the Demon’s Souls remake!!!! Project Athia looked so beautiful but knowing Square Enix… We ain’t getting anything till the next decade hahaha I was also super hyped up for Ratchet and Clank since the whole franchise was part of my childhood!!! Thanks for sharing this with us! 😀

    1. I never played the original Demon Souls, and have only dabbled in Dark Souls, but I’ve found myself increasingly drawn to games that have the same kind of mechanics, like Ashen and Hollow Knight. Curious to see if I click with it!

Enjoy LoU! (At least as much as one can “enjoy” that series.😆). I’ve decided that game is going to be a bit too grim for my current head space, but glad you’ll finally be able to get your hands on it!

  3. HORIZON FORBIDDEN WEST. I know we’ve already squeed about it online, but I am squeeing again here, because I am SO READY FOR IT. Will definitely need to replay the first game beforehand, for sure.

  4. We are having the discussion in our house now about PS5, XBox and Switch. We have a PS4 (mine), XBox (my sons that he actually paid for himself) and an old Wii. I’ve told them not to expect anything but MAYBE one. My son already wants the new Spider-Man. I’ve never played Horizon but want to.

    1. I have very slowly over the last five or six years collected the console gaming trifecta, and while the XBox I think is easier to use (and it’s what we use for all our streaming needs in the apartment), the PS4 has the best exclusives. Horizon is one of my hands down favorite games of all time, I really enjoyed Spider-man, and the Uncharted games were a fun time. PS5 is going to be my priority to upgrade. As for the Switch, there just haven’t been a ton of exclusives for it I’ve really connected with, and I haven’t connected with Breath of the Wild as much as I wanted to, I think partially because open world games aren’t as much of my jam as they used to be.

      1. My guess is we will go with ps5. But it will end up a shared family gift. I’m curious about the fit of the new controller but I think it’ll be good. I just wish I had more time to play. But the kids will enjoy it.
