Currently Reading: UNRAVEL THE DUSK by Elizabeth Lim
Time for the game of “What on earth happened at the end of book one?” UNRAVEL THE DUSK picks up just a few days after the events of SPIN THE DAWN, and while I remember the BIG plot points, I had to go back and skim the ending to remind myself of where we were. But now I’m diving into this tale that began as a story of a girl disguising herself as a boy to try and win the position of the emperor’s tailor. From there she *slight spoilers* journeyed across the kingdom in search of magical components for three very specific dresses, and eventually made a magical deal to break a curse. But now the ramifications of that deal are landing, and Maia must keep a handle on herself while also trying to make sure that the emperor’s wedding goes smoothly so war will finally be put to rest. No pressure, right?
Recently Finished: WE RIDE THE STORM by Devin Madson and THE SUNKEN MALL by K.D. Edwards
WE RIDE THE STORM was one of those books I devoured in a handful of days, despite a rather hefty page count of nearly 500 pages. It definitely sucks you in, bouncing between three viewpoint characters as politics and intrigue drive three different nations to war. It’s also a book with a couple of Big Moments that leave you going “Oh Sh*t.” The sequel WE LIE WITH DEATH comes out in early 2021, and I’m already itching to get my hands on it. Look for a full ARC review soon!
After finishing WE RIDE THE STORM, I needed a break from sprawling second-world fantasy. I’d toyed with picking up a sci-fi book, but couldn’t find anything that both fit my mood and was short enough it wouldn’t derail my TBR. Thankfully, I remembered I JUST picked up THE SUNKEN MALL, an urban fantasy novella set in the TAROT SEQUENCE universe. The author made this installment free to download, so if you’re a fan of the series but haven’t read this, head on over! Suffice to after devouring this adventure in an afternoon, I’ve completely come around on this series, and will probably break down and sneak THE HANGED MAN into my reading stack at some point this summer.
Probable Next Read: EDGEDANCER by Brandon Sanderson
After a couple ARC pile reads, it’s time to jump into the backlist! I am DETERMINED to read OATHBRINGER next month, and that means I need to knock out EDGEDANCER this month. EDGEDANCER is a much more reasonable 272 pages (compared to OATHBRINGER’S 1200+) and is an interstitial novel that follows a side character introduced briefly in WORDS OF RADIANCE.
And that’s my reading this week! What books are on the agenda for you?
