First Impression: THE UNBROKEN by C.L. Clark

Over at io9 this week, Orbit Books unveiled the cover and an excerpt for the upcoming fantasy novel THE UNBROKEN by C.L. Clark. Inspired by North Africa, the story follows a conscript soldier and a princess as they work with each other in an uneasy alliance to dethrone the current ruler. Assassinations, court politics, negotiations that take place in both war rooms and bedrooms…oh, and did I mention it features a f/f romance?

So far so good.  But then take a look at that cover art!  Orbit managed to knock it out of the park again!  (And I’ve linked it to Goodreads if you need to mash the “Want to Read” button.)

The Unbroken

That is the confidence of a woman who is here to kick ass and take names.  But as the synopsis and excerpt reveal, Touraine is more conflicted than you might guess at first glance.  Kidnapped and conscripted as a child, Touraine has spent her whole life as a soldier, forced to fight for the empire that enslaved her.  Now she and her fellow soldiers are being sent to the homeland she hasn’t seen in decades to put down the seeds of rebellion that are growing.  Will Touraine use this chance to take a stand with the rebels?  Or will working with Luca to overthrow her uncle prove to be more advantageous in the long run?

The excerpt only gives us a real look at the character of Touraine, who seems pretty content to do exactly what the empire tells her.  Only time will tell what will finally push her over the edge.  I look forward to seeing more of Touraine when THE UNBROKEN releases March 23rd, 2021.
