Like all good readers, I have an out of control TBR, full of books I’ve purchased that I will definitely read…some day. But by far my biggest sin is my Kindle “pile.” For too long, I was too easily swayed by Kindle Daily Deals, those deliciously tempting $1.99 offers for books I’d really been meaning to read, so might as well pick it up while its cheap, right? Only problem is that the Kindle pile is out of sight, out of mind. My physical books stare at my every day, begging to be read, while the ebooks waste away in the digital cloud. I made a list in 2018 of books from my Kindle backlist that I wanted to prioritize reading and I have read exactly…one. Ten books on a list and I’ve read one. (sigh) Well let’s go ahead and make another list, just to remind myself what the heck is in my elibrary!
If you’re curious about any of these titles, all covers link to Goodreads!
THE CALCULATING STARS by Mary Robinette Kowal
This acquisition came from the lovely Tor eBook of Month Club! (If you haven’t signed up for this program, you should check it out, once a month or more, they give away a free ebook, and it’s usually a heavy hitter from their backlist.) This one is an alt history where a natural disaster threatens to end life on Earth in the 1960s, causing the US to DRASTICALLY accelerate their space program in the hopes of colonizing other planets to save humanity. THE CALCULATING stars is supposed to have some kick-ass nerdy ladies saving the day, and I’m looking forward to reading!
DREAD NATION by Justina Ireland
An #ownvoices alternate history where zombies have started roaming in the wake of the Civil War? The premise has me intrigued to say the least. Jane McKeene is a mixed-race black woman, determined to get ahead by training to be a body guard for the wealthy. But her plans are derailed when she accidentally stumbles into the middle of a conspiracy, one that involves a string of missing persons in Baltimore.
THE HOUSE IN THE CERULEAN SEA by T.J. Klune
I’ve been very, VERY selective about Kindle Daily Deals this year, because of the aforementioned backlist. But I have seen SO many people talk about this book is absolutely charming and a soothing balm in our troubled times, so I couldn’t resist. I’ve been saving CERULEAN SEA for a rainy day, but I will be very surprised if I haven’t found time to read it by the end of the year.
AGE OF ASSASSINS by R.J. Barker
Sigh, this one hurts. I bought not only this book, but the entire trilogy in a Kindle Deal. Three books for ten, how could I resist? And I haven’t read a single one since. This series is high on my Great Series Read List in part because I have the whole dang collection, so I may as well actually read them all, right?
THE GUTTER PRAYER by Gareth Ryder-Hanrahan
Book one in THE BLACK IRON LEGACY series, this book is supposed to be truly weird, but also has some fantastic and unique world-building. Three thieves suffer a betrayal at the hands of their guild and set out on a revenge quest, only to discover secrets about the city they live in that threaten their lives even more. The first two books are out, and I’d love to catch-up in time for book three next year!
And those are just some of the books glaring at me every time I open my Kindle! Have you read any of them?
Dread Nation is SO GOOD! I love that duology so much, I hope you enjoy it. 😀 The House in the Cerulean Sea is one I still need to cross off my TBR, too!

I’m halfway through “The Calculating Stars,” and it’s very good. I LOVE “The Gutter Prayer,” and the sequel, “The Shadow Saint.” I own both “Dread Nation” and “The House in the Cerulean Sea,” but I haven’t read either of them, yet; but, I’ve heard great things about both books! I read “The Bone Ships” by RJ Barker, and it was much better than I was expecting, so I’m assuming his previous trilogy is good, too.
Let me know what you think of all of them!

I’m so glad I’m not the only one. Not only do I have a 500+ Goodreads to-read list, I also have a bunch of Kindle deals and free books on my Kindle list that I still haven’t read! But . . . I mean, I work at a library and I get so many books from there . . . so. And I just joined Netgalley. LOL, I think I might have a “tiny” problem.

One of us! One of us! But seriously, when you see a free book…how can you NOT get it?

The Gutter Prayer is great, it seems pretty clearly inspired by China Miéville’s New Crobuzon trilogy and if it isn’t quite so good it comes close.

I have at least one of these in my kindle backlist as well haha. I usually don’t mind my kindle pile so much? Out of site, out of mind? LOL But this is a great list of books! You have to read The Calculating Stars–sooooo damn good. I also really want to get to Dread Nation.
