Winter 2020/2021 Sci-Fi/Fantasy Book Releases to Get Excited About

It’s hard to believe, but we’ve almost made it to 2021! Huzzah! And so it’s time to start peeking over the horizon and looking at what books await us in the new year. The winter’s a bit more quiet than other months, but there are still some excellent books in the pipeline!

If any of these catch your fancy, all covers link to Goodreads!

December 2020

Hollow Empire  A Sky Beyond the Storm

HOLLOW EMPIRE by Sam Hawke
Release Date: December 1st, 2020

The second book in the POISON WAR series is another adventure for Jovan and Kalina. This brother and sister team work to keep the city-state of Silasta safe, Jovan as a poison-tester, Kalina as a spy. But they’re in unknown territory when it becomes clear that magic is very real and very awake after the events of CITY OF LIES. I’m hearing this is a fantastic sequel and am so excited it’s finally ready to be released!

A SKY BEYOND THE STORM by Sabaa Tahir
Release Date: December 1st, 2020

The YA fantasy quartet that began with AN EMBER IN THE ASHES comes to a close. Laia must contend with jinn, a vengeful empress, and unlikely alliances as she struggles to lead her rebellion to victory. There’s several balls in the air in this finale that I can’t begin to touch on because SPOILERS, but I’m sure there’s a lot of emotional damage coming my way.

January 2021

We Lie With Death  The Mask of Mirrors

WE LIE WITH DEATH by Devin Madson
Release Date: January 12th, 2021

WE RIDE THE STORM was one of those book ones where I finished and immediately reached out to pick up book two, but alas it hadn’t been published yet! A series of warring nations, strange magics, and multiple intriguing POVs, I was absolutely hooked by book one and am itching to see how this series continues! It looks like a new POV will be entering the rotation as empires rise on the ashes of fallen ones, and some soldiers begin to question the price of victory.

THE MASK OF MIRRORS by M.A Carrick
Release Date: January 19th, 2020
I haven’t been shutting up about this one in the last few months, so I DESPERATELY hope I enjoy it! A con artist, a masked vigilante, and a crime boss all cross paths amongst the political feuding of noble houses. As a corrupt magic begins spreading through the city, one Ren must use all of her skills and allies to survive, and perhaps even save the city itself. The plot sounds fantastic, and I ADORE that cover!

February 2021

Out Past the Stars

OUT PAST THE STARS by K.B. Wagers
Release Date: February 23rd, 2020

It’s the final Hail Bristol adventure! The final book in the second trilogy starring the kick-ass smuggler-turned-princess sees Hail making a last stand against an ancient alien race that’s back to reconquer what was once there’s. THE FARIAN WAR trilogy has been wholly different from THE INDRANAN WAR trilogy, as Hail has been put through an emotional wringer, fighting through depression and worse as the cost of ruling mounts. But Hail has never been one to let her people down, and she’s ready to face a new enemy head-on. The second book had a rather abrupt ending, so let’s see where everything ends in this finale!

And those are my picks for the new year! I’m sure even more will be added in the weeks ahead What books are you looking forward to in 2021?

  1. Sigh. Those December ones remind me that I haven’t caught up on those series yet. And I can’t look forward to 2021 yet, as I’m sure December will last another 5 months…

  2. WAIT. Hollow Empire is out on the 1st???? I….have to order that.
I’m super excited for A Sky Beyond the Storm. Although I’ve been listening to those on audio so who knows when I’ll get to it now since my audio listening has gone down so much lol.

  3. I’m reading Hollow Empire atm. It’s a little bit of a slow start but it’s starting to pick up (lots of politics and visiting dignitaries). Mask of Mirrors and We Lie With Death are a couple of my forthcoming reads that I’m very much looking forward to.
