December 2020 Book Haul

Tis the season of books! It’s the last book haul of 2020, and the gifts and giveaways have been MOST generous. Plus I managed to secure a few 2021 ARCs that I’m VERY excited about. So let’s not delay and see what the holiday book fairies brought!

All covers link to Goodreads!

WAYWARD CHILDREN Series by Seanan McGuire
I’m a big fan of the eBook of the Month club, which, surprise, gives away a free ebook every month. They’re always older books, but it’s a great way to fill in holes in my backlist collection. For December, allowed everyone to pick up the entire series of WAYWARD CHILDREN novellas! I had read the first book (EVERY HEART A DOORWAY) already and enjoyed this premise of a home for children that return from strange adventures and don’t quite fit in. We’re talking the kids who stumble into Wonderland and are mildly traumatized by the experience. I always meant to go back and read some of the others in the series, and now I have extra motivation to!

For Christmas, I gave a relative a wishlist for Mysterious Galaxy, an independent bookstore I like to support, and told her to surprise me off the list. The first book I received was HERE AND NOW AND THEN, a speculative fiction story about a time-traveling man who gets trapped in the past and eventually settles down and makes a family – only for a rescue to arrive 18 years later, ready to bring him back to the family he thought he’d never see again. This is supposed to be a very heartfelt story and I’ve heard a lot of good things about Mike Chen, so I’m ready to give this a whirl!

QUEENSLAYER by Sebastien de Castell
This is book five of six in the SPELLSLINGER series, and honestly I don’t know much more about it than that! I’ve loved the first three books in the series, and should hopefully be able to prioritize finishing the last three books starting in February 2021, once my ARCs are FINALLY caught up. Book four, SOULBINDER, has been sitting very patiently on my shelves and I am looking forward to reading both in the new year!

A prequel novella to FORTUNE’S FOOL, this was picked up during a giveaway by the author during Black Friday. (I published my November haul early, which is how it ends up here). FORTUNE’S FOOL was a SPFBO finalist and was very well received, so I figure there’s a good chance I’ll enjoy a snack-sized prequel story!

PAWN’S GAMBIT by Rob J. Hayes
One of my first outings into the world of self-published writing was NEVER DIE, a wuxia-inspired standalone story. At the time, it was a one-off, but the author was so encouraged by the response that he’s decided to do a series of standalone novels set in that same world. I’ve snagged an eARC of the new book, PAWN’S GAMBIT, and will be posting my review as part of a blog tour in January, so stay tuned!

You might have heard me screaming earlier this month when I got approved for the final book in the WAYFARERS series, THE GALAXY, AND THE GROUND WITHIN. Chambers had previously written three loosely connected novels set in the far future when humanity has joined the Galactic Commons, where space travel is common place and alien races are everywhere. Her stories are very much more slice-of-life than space operas, but I always love the wonderful characters she sets in these future environments.

The Unbroken

I had already received an eARC of THE UNBROKEN, but I was DELIGHTED when a surprise physical copy arrived on my doorstep! THE UNBROKEN is a f/f romance between a princess and a conscripted soldier who are plotting to overthrow an empire. The princess wants to dethrone her uncle, and the soldier would appreciate not having to fight against her rebellious homeland. THE UNBROKEN releases in March 2021, so it’ll be a second before I get to this one, but certainly intrigued!

  1. There’s so much self-published fantasy out there that I really want to read and a bunch of it is in this post! I’m not really setting solid goals this year but I do plan to read a bunch more self-published stuff in 2021.
