Currently Reading: THE UNBROKEN by C.L. Clark
Yeeeahh, this is EXACTLY my cup of tea. THE UNBROKEN features Touraine, a woman who’s been trained as a conscript soldier since she was taken from her homeland at the age of 5, and Luca, a princess determined to get an unruly colony under control so she can prove the empire’s throne belongs to her and not her uncle. Touraine is a broken character, one who perceives that the only way to survive is by pleasing the colonists who have essentially enslaved her for two decades; while she chafes at being seen as less-than, she doesn’t see how anyone can realistically overthrow the most powerful empire around. I’m really looking forward to seeing how she evolves, and where Luca ends up; Luca wants to reform the colonies into something more humane, but definitely has her own prejudices she’s bringing to the table. Hope to have a review next week!
Recently Finished: SOULBINDER by Sebastien de Castell
As expected, I blitzed through book four of the SPELLSLINGER series in a handful of days, and had another fun adventure. Well, as fun as you can when a hero is on his own, his best friend is dying somewhere, his family is THE WORST, and his only allies are a group of cursed magic users. You know. Typical fantasy hijinks. Still, I really enjoy these books and find them surprisingly heartfelt for a book that features a talking squirrel cat that would like to eat your eyeballs. Hoping to get to book five soon, but in the meantime, you can read a review of SOULBINDER here!
Probable Next Read: FUGITIVE TELEMETRY by Martha Wells and/or THE BLADE ITSELF by Joe Abercrombie
So the latest Murderbot book wasn’t on my TBR until next month, but I think I’m going to sneak it in after THE UNBROKEN. I have a LOT of high fantasy on the docket this month, and I suspect I would benefit from breaking it up with some sci-fi here and there – particularly since I’m taking the leap into the world of grimdark with THE BLADE ITSELF! THE FIRST LAW series has been on my TBR for three years running now, and I’m committed to reading the first trilogy in this world this year. So before I go from one bleak landscape to another, I think a jaunt with my favorite introverted robot may be in order.
That’s what I’m reading this week – how about you?
I’ve heard great things so far about The Unbroken. I’m excited to read it (and to hear what you thought of it once you’re done).

Glad you’re loving The Unbroken! I wish my reading brain was working better the last couple weeks, all it wants is fluff and it’s decidedly not fluff LOL. But it’s so good!

Ooh I’ve seen a lot of people reading Sebastien de Castell recently, I’d never heard of him.
I just finished The Unbroken! Hoping to write a review today, though lately writing them has been like pulling teeth 😅

I do love when I finish an ARC because it means I’ll finally let myself read all the reviews I’ve been avoiding. Looking forward to yours!

I’ve had The First Law on my “should I read this? should I not?” mental list for year. I keep hearing good things about the writing but I’m so not into Grimdark. Every month or so I alternate bewteen definitely nope and eeehhh maybe I should try it.

Same! On the one hand, I read 100 pages in one sitting, on the other I did have to skim a scene or two, as a lead character’s job description involves torture. The scenes were pretty brief, but something to keep in mind.
