Welcome back to my monthly wrap-up! I skipped a recap for June, as I was set to leave town at the beginning of July and just had too much to do to pull this post together. But I’m back and full of all kinds of exciting updates with my reading!
I spent just over a week on vacation, road-tripping up the California coast to visit my sister who just gave birth (to twins!); since I wasn’t in charge of driving, I got PLENTY of reading done during some of those days of eight hour car rides. In honor of vacation, I let myself go full into mood-reading this month. While I still knocked out a few ARCs, I also gave myself the mental space to just pick up random books from my backlist that I’ve been really meaning to get to. I’ll be back to a more formally planned TBR in August, but for now it’s been great to just pick up a few random odds and ends!
On top of that, I’m breaking with a July tradition that’s held the last few years: a STORMLIGHT ARCHIVES book completely throwing off my TBR. While I still haven’t tackled RHYTHM OF WAR yet, I’ve decided to save it for the end of the year, as the next book in the series likely won’t be released any time soon. That means unlike last year, where I read only three books in July, this month I’ve read SEVEN, which is high not only for July but for 2021 in general! I’ve really enjoyed having so much time for reading, and feel a real sense of accomplishment this month.
Lastly (bear with me, I know this is longer than usual) I want to shout out the last two self-published books I read as part of my monthly goal. In June, I read THE THIEF WHO WENT TO WAR, finishing all of the currently released books in the AMRA THETYS series (click on the title below for my review). In July, I read my review copy of FEAR AND FURY from brand-new author Jamie Jackson. FEAR AND FURY is definitely a hidden gem of a book; if you like superheroes, sarcastic-and-not-always-altruistic heroines, and a splash of romance, you should give this book a read.
Wow, the last few months have been fantastic for this project! Between June and July I’ve finished THREE series – AMRA THETYS by Michael McClung, THE PROTECTORATE by Megan E O’Keefe, and SPELLSLINGER by Sebastien de Castell. Next month, I’m planning on tackling LAST ARGUMENT OF KINGS by Joe Abercrombie, which will finish ANOTHER series to completion! My series TBR spun a little out of control during the first half of the year, but the ending is in sight for multiple projects, and I’m looking forward to knocking some of these out in the coming months!
