Currently Reading: UNDER THE WHISPERING DOOR by T.J. Klune
I haven’t started this one yet as of writing, but I suspect I will shortly! UNDER THE WHISPERING DOOR is a standalone fantasy about a gentleman who has recently died and finds himself at a tea shop for souls who are waiting to cross over. Except this gentleman refuses to cross over until the Manager gives him one week to do so. I ended up falling in love with the whimsy of the last T.J. Klune book I read, THE HOUSE ON THE CERULEAN SEA, so I’m excited to see what he does with this strange premise.

Recently Finished: HALL OF BONES by Tim Hardie and A SPINDLE SPLINTERED by Alix E. Harrow
Had a good reading weekend and finished two books! Self-published dark fantasy HALL OF BONES was a compelling read, though not without a few faults. It is not fast-paced, so you have to be willing to settle in for a saga that’s going to take its time getting to the “good” stuff – thankfully, the Viking-inspired clan politics were engaging and kept me reading! You can find my full review here. Then I went and read A SPINDLE SPINTERED in a single sitting! That’s the good news. The less good news is I found myself a bit underwhelmed by Harrow’s novella. It was perfectly fine, but this more modern tale felt a bit off from the prose of her previous book I’d read, THE TEN THOUSAND DOORS OF JANUARY. I’m still wrapping my head around it, so look for a full review later!

Probable Next Read: VOIDBREAKER by David Dalglish
After some nice gentle reads, it’s time to go back into the pressure-cooker situation of THE KEEPERS series and finally finish that trilogy off! I’ve had this review copy in my stack for a bit, but I’ve been absolutely determined to make time for it this month. This book has walked a fine line of being incredibly dark in places (with some graphic violence, reader beware) but also features some genuinely good people trying to make the world better. It’s sometimes an atonal clash, but I always find myself compelled to keep reading, especially as I’m fascinated by the magical races the author created. As a refresher, THE KEEPERS series is about the city of Londheim that finds itself grappling with the aftermath of an event that renders magic real and awakens several long dormant magical races – races that want their homes back after humans have spent centuries settling what they thought was empty land. Hero Devin is trying to find a way for everyone to leave peacefully, but war seems pretty much guaranteed at this point, after some very unfortunate deaths last book.

Happy reading everyone!
