Most Anticipated SFF Releases: November 2021

Now we’re getting serious: the November releases are here! It’s a busy, busy month as publishers push out their biggest releases of the season. We’ve got trilogy finishers, we’ve got 1000 page tomes, we’ve got intriguing novellas, and more! I’ve narrowed my picks down to my MOST anticipated, but there are plenty more books releasing that aren’t listed.

As a reminder, book shortages are anticipated this winter, so if any of these strike your fancy, pre-order them now!

All covers link to Goodreads if you’d like to check them out further.

The Veiled Throne  Elder Race  Cytonic

THE VEILED THRONE by Ken Liu
Release Date: November 2nd, 2021
Ken Liu’s silkpunk fantasy series is not for those intimidated by hefty page counts (usually around 1000) but is absolutely rewarding to those willing to take the time. This is book three in a planned quartet that has followed multiple characters and their offspring as rulers are overthrown and nations go to war. This is not a magic-heavy book, but gods are alive and real and gently nudging world events as they argue with each other. I’ve loved how Liu shows how much conflicts can pivot on a seemingly innocuous event, and the following of one generation to the next. While book two featured the original characters and their children, book three seems to be firmly passing the torch to the next generation to lead, and watching them struggle with the legacy left to them by their parents.

ELDER RACE by Adrian Tchaikovsky
Release Date: November 16th, 2021

If 1000 page tomes aren’t your thing, how about a quick little novella instead? An anthropologist studying humans on planet finds himself in a conundrum. He’s forbidden from interfering with the lives of the locals, but they believe him to be a great sorcerer and are begging him for help to fend off a dangerous threat. I love these kinds of “magic is just science not understood” stories, and I’m excited to start this one soon!

CYTONIC by Brandon Sanderson
Release Date: November 23rd, 2021

Another long awaited third book, we have book 3 in the SKYWARD series! Book 2 ended on a hell of a cliffhanger, so I’m very excited to get back with Spensa and see just exactly where she ended up! For those who haven’t started this series, SKYWARD follows a group of young fighter pilots as they defend their home from daily incursions from an unknown alien enemy. This is one of Sanderson’s YA adventures, but just as satisfying as his other writings.

The Bone Shard Emperor  Jade Legacy

THE BONE SHARD EMPEROR by Andrea Stewart
Release Date: November 23rd, 2021
How about a book two instead of a book three? This is the sequel to THE BONE SHARD DAUGHTER, which featured a fantastical world where bizarre constructs are created and controlled by small bone chips harvested from the emperor’s subjects. Book one was an endlessly fascinating world, full of world-building and mysteries (and the cutest animal companion) that had me reaching for the next book that hadn’t been written yet. And now it’s here!

JADE LEGACY by Fonda Lee
Release Date: November 30th, 2021

I’ve been waiting literal years for this book, ever since finishing JADE WAR. The final book in THE GREEN BONE SAGA, JADE LEGACY will see the conclusion of one of the most well-written, character-driven series I’ve ever read. A story spanning decades, it follows a crime family in an Asian-inspired world who are struggling to maintain their control over the supply of jade, a rock which grants certain people super-human abilities. THE GREEN BONE SAGA manages to stand out not only for its characters, but for its more modern setting; cities have cars, planes, phones, and TVs and feels analogous to the 1960s. I’m almost ready to pick up my ARC, and I expect to be thoroughly destroyed by the time I finish this book.

What books are you excited for in November?
