Five Sci-Fi Video Games I Can’t Wait to Play

During Sci-Fi Month, we celebrate all things sci-fi, and that means video games get some love too! I’ve decided to round up the games I cannot wait to play in the coming months, from small indie games with big vision, to the blockbuster AAA games I’ve been waiting literal years for. If you love science fiction and games, there’s probably something for you!

I’m linking to each game’s website, so if you want to find out more, give them a click!

They Always Run

Release Date: October 20th, 2021
Platform: PC

This one is already out, but I haven’t had time to buy it or play it yet, so I’m still looking forward to it! THEY ALWAYS RUN is a 2D side-scroller where you play as a bounty hunter who is just out to make a living – oh, and dig up information on those who wronged him in the past, while also getting embroiled in a galaxy-wide conspiracy. You know, typical stuff. The combat looks absolutely slick and I am itching to pick this up in the coming weeks.

Horizon Forbidden West

Release Date: February 18th, 2022
Platform: PS4/PS5

It’s no secret that HORIZON ZERO DAWN is one of my favorite games of all time. I absolutely fell in love with the character of Aloy, but even more so the world that she lived in. Set in a post-post apocalypse, where the world is flourishing once more but full of strange robotic creatures, it effortlessly tells stories on two levels. The first is Aloy’s investigation into the mysterious group that attacked her people, prompting Aloy to explore the world and the other clans in the region. But more importantly, Aloy investigates the ruins of civilizations past and discovers how the world ended and why there are robots all over the place. HORIZON FORBIDDEN WEST will send Aloy to the ruins of San Francisco as she tries to stop a new threat and a new enemy. I’m probably going to do a replay of HORIZON ZERO DAWN in the months leading up to this (so soon) to keep everything fresh – so excited!!

Release Date: 2022
Platform: PC, PS4/PS5

Okay, this is just the cutest concept ever. STRAY puts you in control of a cat in a robot world. Just a simple ordinary cat trying to find his way home after being separated from his family. Along the way, he finds a robot drone named B12 who becomes his buddy as he explores a city populated by robot citizens. Cat. Robot Friend. I don’t know much more than that, but really, I don’t have to, I’m sold.

Citizen Sleeper

Release Date: 2022
Platform: PC

This next indie game is one I’m intrigued because of its more unique mechanics. You are a human conciousness in an artificial body, hiding out from the corporation that technically owns you. To survive on the space station where you live, you’ll need to find work, hunt resources, make friends, and more. But all of that is determined by the fate of the dice. Every morning, you roll a pool of dice. You can then do whatever you want with your day, as long as you have the dice for it. I really enjoy games with a bit of randomness, where you have to figure out how to manage turn to turn with the resources you have. (It’s one reason I enjoy deck-builder games so much). The mechanics plus the concept have bumped this game high up on my “Most Anticipated” list – looking forward to its eventual release!

Release Date: November 11th, 2022
Platform: PC, Xbox Series X/S

No sci-fi video game list would be complete without STARFIELD, the upcoming game from the developers of FALLOUT 4 and ELDER SCROLLS: SKYRIM. Not a ton is known yet, but developer Bethesda is known for big sprawling games where you can just wander around a world and stumble into stories. One of the directors of the game has thrown around terms like “Han Solo simulator,” and really, if you’re just going to let me fly around a galaxy taking odd jobs and getting into trouble, I am fully on board.

  2. I too got Horizon pre-ordered and I can’t wait to explore that universe once again! I plan on replaying the first one on the PS5 just to benefit from the loading time and graphics before the 2nd comes out. As for Stray, I agree. What a cute concept. I’m really curious to see what that will turn out to be like in the end hahah Great list! πŸ˜€
