Most Anticipated: Summer 2022 Sci-Fi/Fantasy Book Releases

You know, I thought I was doing pretty good managing new releases this year. After all, my current split is 60% backlist, 40% new releases. But Good Lord if the summer release schedule isn’t designed to well and truly break me. August alone is enough to destroy my reading schedule for the rest of the year. And yet they all look SO. GOOD. So grab your favorite hot beverage and settle in for the delightful adventures waiting for you this summer!

I have linked all covers to GOODREADS, so for a full synopsis or to add to your own TBR, click on through!

June Book Releases

For the Throne  The Final Strife

FOR THE THRONE by Hannah F. Whitten
Release Date: June 7th, 2022

We kick off the summer with a duology finisher, FOR THE THRONE! FOR THE WOLF was a lush romance story that borrowed a bit from BEAUTY AND THE BEAST, but with several additions to the mythology – including a sister character named Neve with an agenda of her own. Both sisters had POV chapters in the first book, but the marketing materials indicate FOR THE THRONE may be more Neve’s story than Red’s, which will make for an interesting twist!

THE FINAL STRIFE by Saara El-Arifi
Release Date: June 21st, 2022

Next up, we have the beginnings of a new fantasy trilogy inspired by African and Arabian mythology! In a world where your place in the caste system is determined by the color of your blood, three women find their stories intertwined as an empire is faced with the sparks of rebellion. This is a whopping big tome at 640 pages, but I’m eager to check it out!

 48613351._sy475_  Locklands

Release Date: June 21st, 2022

Next up, we have a new fantasy trilogy from an acclaimed fantasy author. Honestly, the only reason I haven’t tried to track down an ARC for this one is because I have not read any of McClellan’s other two traditionally published trilogies (though I enjoyed his self-published urban fantasy novellas), and I want to read those before diving into a whole new series. In this series, a former general has to return to the nobility life he left behind when his mother is murdered and leaves him the head of the family guild. Investigating her murder reveals that the resource that drives the empire, godglass, is running out, and the scarcity could drive an empire to war.

LOCKLANDS by Robert Jackson Bennett
Release Date: June 28th, 2022

If you pay even the slightest bit of attention to my bookish preferences you know how much I LOVE THIS SERIES. I should be starting my ARC of this trilogy finisher any day now, and I cannot wait. If you’re new to THE FOUNDERS series, know that Sancia is a thief who steals an item that allows her to manipulate the runic magic that runs everything in the city from the lights to the factories to weaponry. Doing so not only makes her a target for guild members wanting to obtain that power from themselves, but it puts her on the radar of dangerous entities long thought dead.

July Book Releases

The Book of Gothel  August Kitko and the Mechas from Space

Release Date: July 26th, 2022

Fairytale retelling time! This standalone fantasy is a twist on the Rapunzel adventure, featuring a young woman who leaves her village after her mother’s death and travels to a legendary tower named Gothel to find refuge. There, she meets another woman with a secret, one that unlocks a secret world that belongs in stories.

Release Date: July 12th, 2022

Let’s change things up with a little sci-fi! Author Alex White previously wrote the THE SALVAGERS trilogy that kicked off with A BIG SHIP AT THE EDGE OF THE UNIVERSE. Now they’re back with an adventure about a jazz musician who unexpectedly finds himself recruited to join a cell of mecha soldiers fighting to protect humanity from an impending invasion. I honestly haven’t read too much mecha fiction, so this might be a good place to start!

August Book Releases

The Book Eaters  The First Binding  The Oleander Sword

Release Date: August 2nd, 2022
Buckle in, August is a DOOZY. Let’s start with this standalone fantasy about a secret lineage of people who eat books and then retain all the knowledge that book contains. One mother, however, has to come to grips with a dark fact: that her son is a rare variant that craves human minds instead of books. I’ve already seen quite a few GUSHING reviews for THE BOOK EATERS, so I hope it lives up to the hype!

Release Date: August 16th, 2022

My TBR is so long that I often drag my feet to read anything over 600 pages. After all, I could read two books in the time it takes me to read this single one! So I was highly reluctant to commit to reviewing THE FIRST BINDING given it’s 800-and-change length. But THE FIRST BINDING seemed to haunt me at every turn until at I broke down and an eARC when Tor slipped one into my inbox. It’s the tale of a storyteller and a singer on the run, with the storyteller recounting how they got there in the first place – and how they let loose a great evil. A character telling their story in a tavern has popped up a couple of times in the last decade or so, but if it’s done well, I can read another such tale again!

Release Date: August 16th, 2022

THE JASMINE THRONE was one of my top reads of 2021, so its sequel, THE OLEANDER SWORD, automatically jumps pretty high up on my Most Anticipated meter. It’s a story of women taking back power in their own ways, from a handmaiden embracing her secret magical abilities, to a new mother who is done quietly sitting in the shadows as her husband’s governance leads a city to ruin. Everything about THE JASMINE THRONE just works, from the sapphic romance to the magic, and I can’t wait for the sequel as Malini works on claiming the emperor’s throne and Priya learns to understand her magic. (I’m sure new mom Bhumika is doing kick-ass things too.)

Soul Taken Mercy Thompson  The Undertaking of Hart and Mercy

SOUL TAKEN by Patricia Briggs
Release Date: August 23rd, 2022

Next up, a new entry in a favorite urban fantasy series! In this particular adventure, a local vampire has gone missing, and tracing his whereabouts leads Mercy to discover that people all over the city have been disappearing in the strangest of circumstances. The disappearances went unnoticed because most of the victims were loners, with few to note their absence. Naturally, Mercy can’t let these disappearances stand, so she begins to investigate the strange myths surrounding an entity known as the Harvester.

Release Date: August 23rd, 2022

I have been SO curious about this story, which promises a mash-up of YOU’VE GOT MAIL and SIX FEET UNDER and PRINCESS BRIDE. YOU’VE GOT MAIL is one of my favorite movies of all time, I absolutely adore the conceit of people who don’t get along in real life, but are unwittingly close anonymous pen pals. Hart is a marshal who puts the undead back in the ground, and Mercy is an underkeeper. The two begin an anonymous correspondence without realizing it, and love begins to bloom as the dangers in the land increase. Please be good, please be good, please be good…

 Babel  The Dragon's Promise

Release Date: August 23rd, 2022

Man, August is a good month for standalones apparently! This one comes from R.F. Kuang of THE POPPY WARS fame. Set in an alternate Oxford where magic is derived from the meaning lost in translation of languages, one young translator who works for Babel (the Royal Institute of Translation) finds himself caught up in the Hermes Society, a secret group that works to bring Babel down. I have really come to love fantasies that explore the nuances of language and translation, so this book seems very in my wheelhouse. Plus, that title!

Release Date: August 30th, 2022

Last, but certainly not lease, the sequel to SIX CRIMSON CRANES! SIX CRIMSON CRANES was a masterful YA fantasy that burrowed into my head, making me fear to speak lest I too invoke the curse that could kill one of Shiori’s brothers. But despite being silent, Shiori was not a passive heroine, instead doing everything in her power to lift the curse placed on her family. In the sequel, THE DRAGON’S PROMISE, Shiori must travel to the kingdom of dragons to make good on a promise she made to a dying dragon.

And those are My Most Anticipated books for Summer 2022! What are you looking forward to?
