Most Anticipated Sci-Fi Video Games (Sci-Fi Month 2022)

It’s time for my annual Sci-Fi Month video game round up! I’ve flagged five sci-fi video games that I’m really looking forward to in the coming months. Some of these you’ll even be able to play during Sci-Fi Month itself, while some are a distant glimmer in our eye that we’ll (fingers crossed) be able to play in 2023.

Let’s just assume STARFIELD is already on here. It was ironically on my 2021 list, as it had a 2022 release date that has since slipped to 2023. Will the game be good? Unclear. But let’s talk about some lesser known sci-fi games coming out that need some love.

Release Date: November 3rd, 2022

I absolutely love and adored the PORTAL games, and nothing’s quite scratched the itch the same way since then, although games like THE TALOS PRINCIPLE have certainly tried. Sure, a puzzle game in a testing center gone awry with a cheeky companion AI seems a little derivative at this point, but if the puzzles are good, I’m willing to forgive it.

Release Date: November 14th, 2022

I do love a good management sim, and this futuristic gas station game looks like it has potential. Besides the usual loop of making profit to upgrade your shop to run more efficiently, there’s a few ominous hints at maybe some other things happening behind the scenes. I mean, the corporation you answer to sure is interested in all the data points they can collect from customers….

Release Date: November 15th, 2022

When I first sat down to write this post, I was lamenting the lack of a release date for this game about a family trying to survive an alien invasion. It had been a minute since we’ve had an update on SOMERVILLE (almost a full year since the last trailer), and I was sure we wouldn’t see anything until 2023. Then SURPRISE! The developers announced it was coming out during Sci-Fi Month! What timing! SOMERVILLE looks to have some of the side scrolling eeriness of games like INSIDE, and I’m looking forward to turning the lights off and immersing myself in its story.

Release Date: 2023

Okay, we have here a scientist trying to figure out what happened to a missing expedition team (hint, nothing good). The developers are calling this a “philosopical adventure,” and from what I can tell from the gameplay trailer, this is more puzzle- and story-driven than action (which is fine by me!). It also looks a bit eerie, what with finding dead bodies on a mostly empty planet and all. I’m sure the missing expedition team didn’t find anything that could threaten the universe.

Release Date: ???

What if Orphan Black, but in space? That seems to be the very vague promise of THE ALTERS, which is centered around one man and his…clones? as they try to return to Earth. At this point, the game developer won’t even confirm what genre the game is going to be, so I hesitated to include it on this list. Still, the trailer caught my eye and I’ll be watching to see what new information is released about the game down the line.

What sci-fi games are you looking forward to in the future?
