Most Anticipated Releases – First Half of 2020

If you’re reading this blog, chances are you probably have a daunting TBR.  We readers are blessed with more books than we could possibly ever read, and yet we shall not stop in our efforts to try!  My TBR is slowly gaining enough mass to implode, and if I’m going to fight a losing battle, I’m taking you all with me!  So below I’ve highlighted 15 of my Most Anticipated Releases of 2020!  For my own sanity (and to account for releases that haven’t been announced yet), I’ve limited this list to the first six months of the year.  Come back in June to see picks for the second half of they year!

All the covers are linked to Goodreads, so if you need these on your list, click away!

THE UNSPOKEN NAME by A.K. Larkwood
Release Date: February 11th, 2020
Female orc thief assassin doing her best to thwart destiny?  Sounds like a ride to me!  Early buzz has been good, and I’m looking forward to checking out my ARC copy in January!

OF CURSES AND KISSES by Sandhya Menon
Release Date: February 18th, 2020
I adored Menon’s YA rom-com, WHEN DIMPLE MET RISHI, and I’ve been meaning to check out her “extended universe” of standalone books.  This, however, is Menon’s first try at fantasy romance.  A modern retelling of Beauty of the Beast set a boarding school with an Indian girl in the lead?  Sounds like a sumptuous book to curl up with!

THE SHADOWS BETWEEN US by Tricia Levenseller
Release Date: February 25th, 2020
This sounds like a delicious premise: a woman at court plans to woo and marry the Shadow King – then kill him and take control of the kingdom.  Only problem is, there are others trying to kill the king, so she’ll have to keep him alive long enough for her plan to work.  Oh, and try not to fall in love with him in the process.

A PALE LIGHT IN THE BLACK by K.B. Wagers
Release Date: March 3rd, 2020
I’ve made no secret of the fact that I adore Hail Bristol, gunrunner-turned-empress in an action-packed space opera.  So when the author of the INDRANAN WAR trilogy announced that she was writing a new series set in the near-future following the exploits of what is essentially the “Space Coast Guard,” I was all in!

MASTER OF SORROWS by Justin T. Call
Release Date: February 21, 2019
This one has been out in the UK for a while now, to great acclaim by the fantasy readers over there!  It’s your classic tale of orphan boy raised to greatness because of his talent for magic – except that boy is realizing he might be a reincarnated evil god.  What do you do when you realize you’re the villain of the story?  Looking forward to reading my copy soon!

SMOKE BITTEN by Patricia Briggs
Release Date: March 10th, 2020
New year, new Mercy Thompson!  Your favorite coyote-shapeshifter/mechanic is back, here to protect the Tri-City area once more. This time, a deadly creature has escaped the fae-dimension  known as the Underhill.  A chaotic and destructive creature that can look like anyone, and control anyone it bites.  Sounds like tense times are ahead!

THE CITY WE BECAME by N.K. Jemisin
Release Date: March 26th, 2020
I’ve only managed to read THE FIFTH SEASON of THE BROKEN EARTH trilogy, but it was enough to prove that Jemisin is a talented fantasy writer with a deep imagination and deft hand at unusual story-telling.  So I’m VERY curious about this new tale, which imagines a world where every city has a literal soul.  But New York?  New York has five.  And they’re going to have to work together if they’re to stop an ancient evil.

NIGHT OF THE DRAGON by Julie Kagawa
Release Date: April 2nd, 2020
The final installment in a YA fantasy trilogy I’ve really been enjoying!  The last two books have been a blast.  They’re inspired by Japanese folklore and mythology, and have a heavy anime vibe to them.  Our heroes have one last chance to stop the Master of Demons from using the Scroll of a Thousand Prayers to wreak destruction on the world, and they may have to align with some demons to do it.

THE RANGER OF MARZANNA by Jon Skovron
Release Date: April 21, 2020
You may have seen me screaming on Twitter recently as Orbit just sent me a hardcopy ARC to drool over!  Honestly though, look at that cover art. As for the story, it’s a Russian-inspired epic fantasy about a woman training to be a Ranger, a protector of the land.  An invading force threatens her people and murders her father, leaving Sonya to travel looking for a force strong enough to beat back the attack.  Making her life more complicated is her brother, a powerful sorcerer – and ally to the invading forces.

SHOREFALL by Robert Jackson Bennett
Release Date: April 21, 2020
FOUNDRYSIDE was one of my favorite reads of the last few years, so I’ve been impatiently awaiting the sequel to hit the printing presses.  It’s almost here!  Bennett created a fantastic magic system in this series, one that’s almost akin to computer coding – write the correct series of runes on an object to get it to do what you want.  Write the runes in an incorrect order, or use the wrong rune entirely, and you might cause it do something else like, say, explode. Also there’s talking inanimate objects.  Please just read this series already.

RACE THE SANDS by Sarah Beth Durst
Release Date: April 21, 2020
Durst is an author I’ve been wanting to read for a while, and a standalone epic fantasy seems like as good as place as any to start!  This is a world where you reincarnate, and augers can read in your aura what your fate is in the next life.  It’s a barometer, not a fate set in stone, meaning you still have time to turn your life around.  But if you stray to far into darkness, you’ll be doomed to come back as a monster known as a kehok.  Your only shot at redemption?  Winning the Races.  Two women of different backgrounds come together as rider and trainer to win the cash prize that will help them escape desperate circumstances.  I’m intrigued to find out more about this world and will be diving in to my ARC in the next few months.

NETWORK EFFECT by Martha Wells
Release Date: May 5th, 2020
Murderbot. Full. Length. Novel.  Need I say more?  I’ve been eagerly awaiting this release for MONTHS and I am so excited for more Murderbot in my life.

KINGDOM OF LIARS by Nick Martell
Release Date: May 5th, 2020
And now, for one of my favorite fantasy sub-genres: court dramas!  Now take a court drama, and add a magic that costs a portion of your memory to use.  Now add a group of petty thieves who get in way over their heads.  Stir it all together and you have a book I most definitely want to add to my shelves! (And yes, that’s the UK cover up above, because I fell in love with it and no one can stop me!)

HOUSE OF DRAGONS by Jessica Cluess
Release Date: May 12th, 2020
This is being pitched as BREAKFAST CLUB with dragons.  Five houses compete to win the dragon throne – except for the first time in this competition, outcasts are being called to compete.  That means an usual crew is thrust into deadly circumstances, where there can only be one winner.

THE ORDER OF THE PURE MOON REFLECTED IN WATER by Zen Cho
Release Date: June 23rd, 2020
A novella about a woman who joins up with a group of thieves to protect a sacred object that is said to include found family and wuxia fantasy tropes?  Yes please!  It doesn’t hurt that this one comes with GORGEOUS cover art.

And that is my list of Most Anticipated Reads for the First Half of 2020!  I’m sure I’m forgetting another half dozen books, but this is an excellent starting point!

  1. Fantastic list. I’m really regretting my book buying ban right now lol. OF CURSES AND KISSES looks AMAZING and I am all about BatB retellings. I’m still working on my list…I think mine will mostly consist of sequels hahaha.
