Currently Reading: NOPHEK GLOSS by Essa Hansen
My first official read for Sci-Fi Month is trekking along spectacularly! The author has created a fantastical universe to explore, with aliens and technology I haven’t seen in other sci-fi books. I love doing deep dives into original worlds, and NOPHEK GLOSS is definitely sucking me in. The main character is a touch too angry impulsive hot-head for my taste, but, well, he’s got reason to be all those things, so it’s hard to knock the book too much for it (and it’s a small flaw in a book I’m otherwise very much enjoying). Just about two-thirds through this one, so likely will have a review ahead of its release on November 17th!

Recently Finished: THE BONE SHARD DAUGHTER by Andrea Stewart
Catching up with my review pile turned out to be a delight! This fantasy mystery had magic that was dark and somewhat grotesque, but balanced it out with some wonderful characters, including smuggler-turned-reluctant-hero Jovis and his strange otter-cat Mephi. This was a lovely read, and the magic system of constructs powered by draining human life was fascinating. Definitely eager to see where this series goes!

Probable Next Read: THE BURNING GOD by R.F. Kuang
Continuing my theme of alternating Sci-Fi Month with review reads, I’m tackling the final book in THE POPPY WAR trilogy next! This one also releases November 17th, so I won’t have a review up beforehand, but I am SO grateful I managed to snag an eARC! This series has had utterly gripping characters to go with its often devastating plot, and I cannot wait to see how it all ends.

And those are my reads this week! What are you reading?

  1. Seen a few people talking up Nophek Gloss these past few days, think I’ll check it out soon. I also feel like one of the only people in the world who hasn’t started The Poppy War series, even though it sounds like the kind of gritty, dark, devastating read I’d devour.

As for what I’m reading, I’ve just finished Repo Virtual by Corey J. White and thinking of starting the first volume of the Akira manga next.

    1. Oh Repo Virtual has always sounded intriguing to me! The Poppy War is one of those books I always feels weird saying I “enjoyed” because it’s about some pretty grim stuff. But Rin is fascinating because she walks that line of being pretty terrible, but still someone you want to watch. Like I always understand her emotional logic, even when I’m going “don’t do it!!”

  2. all three of these are on my TBR. I recently finished An Absolutely Remarkable Thing by Hank Green, and next book I plan to pick up is Crosstalk aby Connie Willis. I’ve been reading a lot of new-ish stuff lately.

  3. I hope to start The Poppy War series the next year (to be honest I was hoping to do it this year but now it does not seem probable) and I am really curious about Nophek Gloss. I keep reading so many interesting things about it (especially about the worldbuilding)!
